Science (Practical Guides)

Intro to Science DreamI am teaching Physical Science, an intro to science freshman course, at a high school in NH. I asked my students to find some information on who discovered the parts of the atom for homework. Most of my students didn't have much success with the internet, their science text book, or other text books. However, one of my students brought in this book. It had a full page on the information that I was looking for, plus other references on other aspects of the atom. The atom wasn't the only topic that I was impressed with. In general it contains an excellent, basic description of most fundamentals of science. For a teacher that is trying to find new ways of presenting information, it is truely a find. It is also a great companion for the student that might have a little trouble in the sciences. There are wonderful, full-color illustrations to accompany simple, yet well written and content filled text. In short, I was very impressed with this book. Not to mention the author was also involved in another of my favorite books "The Way Things Work". If I could require this book for my students, and reccommend it to all science teachers, I would.

Secret Longings of the Heart: Overcoming Deep Disappointment and Unfulfilled Expectations

YOU CAN TRIUMPH OVER LIFE'S DISAPPOINTMENTS!Every Christian woman can identify with this Carol Kent book. It lets us admit that life isn't perfect and gives positive, practical and scriptural advice for facing those disappointments. Kent first invites us to explore our deepest longings and recognize where the reality of life has fallen short of our expectations. She then encourages us not to lose hope or become embittered, but rather to take positive action by teaching how to run those unfulfilled longings through a scripturally based values grid. "By acknowledging and evaluating our passions, we can discover how to lead a much more honest, focused, fulfilling and purposeful life--a life based on eternal values." (Kent, 1990) I highly recommend the book and also the study guide for small group use.

Selected Prose of Christina Rossetti
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (May, 1998)
Average review score:

More than a Poet: Rossetti and her ProseWith the recent scholarly and popular interest Christina Rossetti's poetry has inspired, P. G. Stanwood and David A. Kent's Selected Prose of Christina Rossetti could not have been published at a more opportune time. Stanwood and Kent point out that though Rossetti was a deeply religious woman and that bulk of her poetry was devotional and her prose religious, scholarship has, as of yet, paid little attention to any but her more secular work. And though there have been a few recently published anthologies of Rossetti's work, these anthologies pay scant attention to her prose. Almost none of her prose has been published since the first editions of the nineteenth century, and these editions are extremely difficult to find. Stanwood and Kent's book provides generous excerpts from all of Rossetti's prose, both her short stories and her religious work. The introductions to each of the excerpts provide publication histories and synopses of the whole works, and the endnotes and the lengthy general introduction provide a highly valuable background to Rossetti's life and work. The recent attention to Rossetti's poetry, viz. "Goblin Market", has drawn attention to Rossetti's imaginative powers and to her literary genius, but Selected Prose reveals a new dimension of Rossetti's mind and interests--she was a woman of a sensitive and powerful intellect, and her grasp and treatment of theological issues is astute and bold for a woman of her time. Anyone seriously interested in Rossetti's work ought to read her prose.

Shoes Your Weapon

Violetta just keeps getting betta! At last! The next stellar installment in what I hope is a continuing series for a long time to come; Violetta is at it again, hunting another serial killer w/a particularly gruesome technique, but enjoying herself erotically along the way...And as her story expands, it also gets closer to home! Readers who caught Violetta's first adventure SHOE LEATHER will be hard-pressed to figure out just how close Violetta is to the new killer, but will no doubt be riveted all the way to the end of this page-turner. Glad to see Kent still in fine form both with the thriller aspects of this story and the juicy erotic scenes, too, but where's the film version? These books would make a great HBO series a la Red Shoe Diaries. Can't wait for the next one!

Silly Goose
Published in Paperback by Simon & Schuster (Juv) (March, 1986)
Average review score:

This is my favorite children's book, has been since I was 3.I got this book when I was three, and now since I am older I see the point of the book. Silly Goose may not be smart in the way knowing names of animals and plants, but she has plenty of common sense.

Wonderful student supplementAs a speech pathology student, I found this dictionary to be a great academic and professional investment. I found it helpful for every aspect from writing clinical reports to studying for an exam. The illustrations were also terrific (those taking anatomy know what I mean). A Communication Disorder student's must have!

If you like campy 60's TV shows you'll love thisWow. This book is a tribute to Illya Cariacan of the Man from Uncle TV series. If you love the Avengers, I spy, or The man from Uncle you'll love this book.
The story tells of a 60's TV spy series TV actor, his family and his real life as a Canadian spy. His old TV show buddies get involved with the bad guys, and his sons pick up some of the family trade.
You do need to suspend belief due to the rocky plot line, but that just adds to the campyness that keeps us fans going. I wouldn't mind if they made it into a TV movie.

factual and fast moving playDavid Kent was an amateur actor and as a child actor took part in Orson Wells radio show War of the Worlds that scared listeners of a Martian invasion. He was a consumate Borden Scholar and insisted in writing only true facts. His book "40 Whacks" is a classic. David died before publication of his book and play. The book is a hardcover limited edition.
